Lancashire Tourism Awards

Blog-Every-Day-in-November-with-RosaliliumThe topic for #BEDN today is ‘A Day in the Life‘ so we thought we would share a little bit about what we have been up to!  Yesterday (7th November 2013) Becki and Gill from Events Northern Ltd were lucky enough to attend the Lancashire Tourism Awards, as guests of the University of Central Lancashire, who were the headline sponsor for the awards.

This year the awards were held at the beautiful and awe inspiring Blackburn Cathedral which they hope to use for more conferences and special events in the future.  Over 400 industry colleagues and sponsors attended the sell out event and 20 of the county’s finest tourism businesses were awarded for excellence in their field.

After the drinks reception the evening kicked off with some images and soundbytes about Lancashire.  It was a great reminder of the beautiful region we live in (lest we forget!) before the official welcome by Ruth Connor, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire.  In the North West Lancashire has the second highest visitor numbers ahead of Cumbria, Merseyside and Cheshire.  The equivalent of the population of the UK visits Lancashire each year!  Tourism is of vital importance to the economic good health of Lancashire and makes a £3.4billion contribution to the visitor economy.

Caterers With A Twist presented a Lancashire inspired three-course dinner before the presentations got underway.  We were in good company on our table alongside the Event Management degree course leader and lecturers from UCLan, Qube Events and The Villa at Preston North End.

The ceremony was hosted by Simon Calder, Senior Travel Editor of The Independent and TV and radio broadcaster, who provided a witty introduction to the awards, accompanied by hilarious pictures of some of his recent adventures in the UK and further afield.

As one of only two known Yorkshire folk in the audience Yorkshire certainly got a lot of stick throughout the evening!  However despite the friendly rivalry the evening certainly made me extremely proud to live and work in the glourious county of Lancashire.

It was great to see lots of familiar names had been shortlisted and there were some very derserving winners announced.  Please click here for a list of the nominees and winners for each category – well done to everyone listed!

The evening drew to a close with a speech from Paul Heathcoate who reminded us of further reasons to be proud of Lancashire.

Huge thanks to UCLan for their kind invitation to attend this wonderful evening which definitely left a lovely warm feeling inside.
